Program/Service Notes:
Teen Court is an award-winning, youth directed program that has operated for 10 years in LaPorte, and 5 years in Michigan City. First time offenders who plead guilty (of offenses such as shoplifting, theft, underage drinking, criminal mischief and battery) appear before a jury of their peers for sentencing. Sentences include a combination of community service, restitution, apologies to the victims, essays, counseling and future service as a Teen Court juror. This program makes offenders accountable for their first, and hopefully last, juvenile offense, provides education, training, and "hands on" participation in the juvenile justice system. It promotes respect for the law and our recidivism rate of 5% shows us that they are not being re-arrested. The defendants are tried by others who do not know them. Confidentiality is stressed and respected by the participants. It also engages volunteer students in community service and gives defendants a chance to volunteer only once they have completed their sentence. This program has tremendous community support and Judges Steve King and Paul Baldoni both allow us to utilize their courtrooms for this program.
