Barker Mansion

Former estate of John H. Barker, the founder of the Haskell & Barker Railroad Car Company. The 38 room mansion, built in 1857 and modeled after English Victorian manors, features hand-carved marble fireplaces, mahogany, walnut and teak woodwork and baroque ceilings.

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is located approximately 50 miles southeast of Chicago, Illinois in the counties of Lake, Porter, and LaPorte in Northwest Indiana. The national lakeshore runs for nearly 25 miles along southern Lake Michigan, bordered by Michigan City, Indiana on the east, and Gary on the west.

The Center offers drawings, prints and historic photographs of the Indiana Dunes; fifty pieces of Meso-American style pottery from the 1920's; prints by Oskar Kokoschka and Marc Chagall; paintings by Victor Petravicius and Karel Appel. This permanent collection is exhibited in the galleries each winter.

Old Lighthouse Museum

Built in 1858, the old lighthouse had a lantern with a light that could be seen from 15 miles. Sperm oil originally fueled the beacon; the use of kerosene began in 1880. This building also served as a house for the light keeper and his family. Today, it is a maritime museum and is on the National Register of Historic Places.Open March-December 1pm-4pm Tuesday-Sunday. Closed Mondays.
